Speaker Topic: Shakespeare on the Lake

Pilar McKay

Speaker: Pilar McKay

Speaker Bio:  Pilar McKay, Ph.D. is a rural arts and culture advocate, active placemaker, and communications professor. Committed to applying theory in practice, she serves as an accelerator on many start-up arts projects with small budgets that have large goals. She serves as managing director of Shake on the Lake, a Shakespeare Festival headquartered in her hometown of Perry, New York, which she also co-founded with a high school classmate in 2011. She is also managing member and co-founder of Silver Lake Brewing Project, a 3BBL microbrewery located in a historic building. She has taught communication at Syracuse University's Newhouse School, American University, and SUNY Brockport and lives in her hometown of Perry, New York.

Talk Description:  Shake on the Lake Theatre Company started as a Facebook conversation between two high school classmates about revitalizing an underused public beach on rural Silver Lake, New York. In six years, the organization has grown into a multi-county tour that travels throughout Western New York, hires around ten seasonal artists and staff, and includes educational programming for K-12 students, adults with dementia, and incarcerated adults. Join Pilar McKay, the Managing Director and co-founder of Shake on the Lake, as she shares experiences in scaling up while reflecting on lessons the organization learned about project management and internal communication.
