    Course Description: 

    Starting up a PMO is not the same for every organization.  It is also necessary to continuously improve the functions of existing PMO’s.  It is typically a huge cultural change, which needs to be managed as such to ensure adoption.  It is also necessary to find the right level of rigor and process to apply, depending on the needs and tolerance level of the organization.This session will present several approaches and tools for starting up or improving a successful PMO.  Many different approaches will be covered based on proven case studies from a diverse set of organizations.For as long as PMO’s have existed, they seem fail as much as they succeed.  This session provides you with the proper tools and knowledge to be successful the first time by understanding and working within the culture of your organization to provide value and ongoing success.


    PMO Leaders, Project and Program Managers, Project Sponsors, Directors, Executives either currently running or interfacing with a PMO, or considering starting one up in the future.


    Each of these topics will be covered with multiple examples of how to accomplish each key task:

    • Assessing the current state and looking for the pain points to quickly address

    • Understanding current project and product life cycles and how to develop/tailor the most applicable one for the organization

    • Developing the perfect set of tools to roll out in the first iteration of the PMO or the next improvement iteration (and it is always an iterative effort)

    • People – who are the right people to staff and grow the PMO as well as provide much needed visible support


    • Lecture and interactive classroom discussions

    • Introduction of a robust set of tools and process to consider for your PMO startup/improvement initiative

    • Hands-on exercises that will help promote more effective and creative approached that will work in your organization

    • Analysis of case studies of real-world situations

    About the Speaker:

    Janet Burns, PMP, CSM

    Janet Burns, PMP, is president of JB Worldwide, a project management consulting and training firm and specializes in PMO development and maturity improvement.

    Ms. Burns has implemented and led maturity improvement programs for PMO’s at many companies in her career, including the New York Times, Viacom, First Bank, and over 30 additional public and private organizations.   Ms. Burns has been in the project management field for over 20 years with extensive experience managing large software projects and enterprise wide process improvement projects.  She also delivers training courses on all project management topics as well as Agile and Six Sigma methods.  Ms. Burns is currently on the board of the Delaware Valley Chapter of PMI and is a frequent speaker at industry events.  She was named to the PMI Power 50, a list of 50 prolific leaders in project management.

    Ms. Burns holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
