Our Top Story Tonight: The Project Management of TV News

Project management often involves wrangling many moving parts, in order to collectively attain a goal. But, in the world of broadcasting, the goal itself can change in an instant. Producing a 30-minute local newscast is about managing a new project every single day—and sometimes more than one a day. Learn how producers balance quality, costs and risks in order to create a seamless bit of television that is meticulously timed to the second.

Bios

Stephen Adams is a freelance reporter at WBNG-TV in Binghamton, N.Y. He has interned at the CBS News bureau in London, as well as at WROC-TV and WHAM-TV in Rochester, N.Y. Prior to his broadcast work, Stephen interned with Fusion Productions, as a video editor. He got his start in media by doing on-air segments for the Emmy award winning nationally syndicated educational program “Teen Kids News.” Stephen will graduate in December from the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in politics.

Chris Adams is a 1979 graduate of the Cornell University College of Engineering and has enjoyed a long career with Kodak. He worked with the founding members of the PMI Rochester chapter, and coordinated their first self-study and offering of the PMP exam. He served as chapter president for two years. In 1997, on behalf of a 6,000 person Kodak team, Chris and the project manager received PMI’s International Project of the Year Award for the Advantix Advanced Photo System. His proudest accomplishments are his children, Stephen and Laura.
